Haldimand County warns residents of rising waters, flood potential

After days of ice accretion, snow and heavy rain — then sudden warm temperatures — Haldimand County is warning area residents of fast-moving water and flooding potential along the Grand River.
The forecast rain this weekend is expected to increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas typically prone to flooding.
Property owners in Caledonia, Cayuga and Dunnville are the most at-risk, says Haldimand County and water levels are expected to remain elevated for a few days.
Local emergency services are reminding people to stay away from bodies of water during the flood-risk period, and parents and guardians are advised to keep children and pets away from fast-flowing rivers and streams.
“Landowners are advised to secure property along the river and make sure dams, culverts and catch basins are free from debris and functioning properly,” a statement from the County read, adding that home insurance policy owners should review their flood coverage.
