Haldimand County Mayor and council call on OPP to enforce injunctions

The mayor of Haldimand County is calling on the OPP to enforce court injunctions against protesters at a residential development in Caledonia.

Protesters have been camped out at the McKenzie Meadows site for over a month, halting construction.

In a statement, which was also signed by council, Mayor Ken Hewitt says this is an “illegal occupation.”

“I am tired of hearing about stolen land and that we are guilty of stealing land. We did not steal any land as everyone has legally bought and paid or paying for the property that they rightfully own,” he said.

“The Federal government is solely responsible for the mismanagement of land over the years with respect to our First Nations people across Canada and they will be the party responsible to make the appropriate amends. Not you or I.”

The approvals were made with the support of the elected council, who demonstrators say does not speak for them.

The Confederacy Chiefs Council did not sign on to the deal and say they support the demonstrations.
