It took 41 years, but Canada has captured World Cup gold in women’s slalom.

Guelph’s Erin Mielzynski, 21, had never placed higher than 13th on the World Cup circuit, but used a strong second run in Germany on Sunday to deliver a breakthrough performance.

In the process, she became the first Canadian woman to win a World Cup slalom race since Betsy Clifford in 1971.
