Guardians of the Galaxy is a space epic directed by James Gunn (Super, Slither) and is the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill (aka Star Lord), a human who was plucked from Earth when he was a child and has been raised by a group of smugglers called the Ravagers, led by the blue skinned Centaurian Yondu (Michael Rooker). After his latest job goes awry, Quill must team up with a group of criminals – the deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a vengeful warrior named Drax (Dave Bautista), and Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a bounty hunting raccoon who works alongside a tree-like humanoid named Groot (Vin Diesel) – to obtain a mysterious orb from the Kree renegade Ronan before he can destroy the Xandarian race.

The decision to adapt such an obscure group of heroes for the big screen was a risky move, but Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige was  “Guardians of the Galaxy is the riskiest movie we’ve done since Iron Man but in many ways that makes it the most exciting movie we’ve done since Iron Man. It means we can surprise people and exceed expectations. When I was a kid and I would go to the movies, most of the characters—Indiana Jones, Marty McFly, the Gremlins—I had never heard of before. I love the notion of being able to introduce some originality and although all of it is based on the great work that was done in the comics, because so few people are aware of them, I hope it feels like something very new and very fresh in the way that almost all those movies in the ’80s were when I was a kid.” Look for our review of Guardians soon, but we can say with confidence this is possibly the best Marvel film yet and is one of the funniest films we’ve seen all year.

Guardians of the Galaxy is rated PG.
