Grimsby woman charged with manslaughter after opioid overdose

Niagara police have arrested a woman from Grimsby after a 27-year-old resident was found dead from an opioid overdose.

On Nov. 26, 2022, the force responded to an incident in which a 27-year-old woman was found dead in the family home from a drug overdose.

Police say her death was attributed to protonitazene toxicity, which is a synthetic opioid -significantly stronger than fentanyl.

Following a prolonged investigation, Sophie Ward, 27, of Grimsby was arrested on Monday for manslaughter and drug trafficking related charges.

Officers say Ward is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing today at a St. Catharines courthouse.
