Gretzky as Leafs prez? “It’s news to me”
Wayne Gretzky fans have clogged Twitter after a suggestion on a Toronto sports radio talk show that the great one would be a good candidate for president of the Maple Leafs.
But Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment says there have been “no discussions of any type” with Gretkzy.
The team president position has been vacant since Brian Burke was fired. He was replaced as GM by Dave Nonis, but not as team president.
On NHL Radio today Gretzky says there’s nothing to the rumours. “It was news to me and obviously that’s all it was was rumour and its nice that people think of me and mention me but it’s really 100 percent no truth to it.”
Gretzky resigned as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. He hasn’t been a part of the league since.
