A Montreal-based company has brought the first of three environmentally-friendly ships to the Great Lakes.

The Federal Yukina, along with its 20 crew members arrived in Hamilton Thursday morning and were welcomed with a special ceremony. Adam Atkinson got on board:

It was travelling from Japan, where it was built last year. The company, Fednav — which is the leading terminal operator at the Port of Hamilton — says its vessel is 12 percent more fuel efficient than other ships and will save almost eight-hundred tonnes of fuel each year.

Paul Pathy of Fednav Group explains what makes this ship different. “What’s different about this generation of ships is that they are built to be more fuel efficient; designed to burn less fuel as they go at the same speed. This type of engine puts less nitrogen oxide gas into the air.”

The Hamilton Port Authority says this new green technology will mean lower costs for customers.
