Today is “Good Citizenship Day” in Grimsby. This special day was made to remember Brandee Elliot’s birthday, she was tragically killed in a car accident 18 years ago. Brandee’s mother has kept her memory alive, by encouraging children in the community to be “good citizens.”
“This day is really special to me as a mother and as a citizen of Grimsby because it commemorates my daughter’s life.” Nancy Elliot lost her daughter Brandee 18 years ago but every year since then she’s stopped by schools in Grimsby with flowers for the secretary and a good citizenship plaque to give to a student who gives back to their community like Brandee did when she was alive.
“Our job as teachers is to teach curriculum but more importantly I think it’s about providing an environment where kids can thrive be exposed to different experiences and become good global citizens,” says Wayne Hodgson.
The Brandee Elliot Foundation was started by Brandee’s friends and every year it helps the community with a special project. “It’s good to let her memory live on, and remember all the great things that she’s done.” Lim Bogucki won the good citizenship award two years ago at Nelles, by raking his elderly neighbours leaves and shovelling their snow. “It was an honour, it was really something to win that award, to know people appreciated what I did it was great.”
This years winners will be awarded at the end of the school year.
