(Updated video) Officials at the Greater Niagara General Hospital have announced the C difficile outbreak there officially over.

The outbreak was first declared in early December, and lasted almost two months.

Eight people contracted the infection from the hospital. Three people died, but c diff was a contributing factor in only one of those deaths.

The Niagara Health System says it continues to see a high number of people coming in to the hospital with cases acquired in the community.

Last week the hospital announced it will use a new UV light disinfectant system in its fight against c diff; it will be the first hospital in Canada to do that.

Sarnia’s hospital is also dealing with an outbreak. It says it’s following recommendations used in the NHS outbreak last year, by waiting 30 days after c diff rates return to normal before declaring an end to the outbreak.

The outbreak was the second at GNGH in the past 12 months.
