The Giver

The Giver is a science fiction film directed by Phillip Noyce (The Bone Collector). The film is an adaptation of the Newbury Medal winning novel of the same name by author Lois Lowry. Set in a structured and regimented society, the story follows a boy named Jonas as he spends time with The Giver, a man chosen to guard the secrets of community’s past. From him Jonas quickly learns of the dark nature of their existence and realizes that he has to rescue his loved ones before he puts them in harms way. The film stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgård, Odeya Rush, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift.

Jeff Bridges has been trying to bring The Giver to the big screen for nearly 20 years, originally as a vehicle for him to direct his father. “My daughters read the book, but before I had known that they had read the book, I was looking for some material in which to direct my father, Lloyd Bridges,” he recalls. “I also wanted to make a movie that my kids could watch at the time. I was looking through a catalogue of children books and I came across this wonderful cover of a book, with this old, grizzled kind of guy on the cover and thought, ‘Oh yeah, my dad can play that guy!’”
