Gas leak clears downtown Welland

A large natural gas leak forced the evacuation of dozens of homes and businesses in downtown Welland this afternoon.

A contractor working near East Main and Division Streets accidently ruptured the line, sending gas fumes into the air.

People living within a block and a half area were told to leave. They weren’t allowed to start their cars for fear of igniting an explosion.

The neighbourhood was given the all-clear two hours later.
