Funeral held for staff sergeant

A funeral service for Hamilton Police staff sergeant Ian Matthews was held Sunday.

It was not an official police funeral, but officers came out in numbers to pay their respects, including Hamilton Police chief Glenn De Caire.

The service was at the Bay Gardens Funeral Home on Rymal Road East in Hamilton.

After it was over, police lined the street as the hearse drove by. Other mourners gathered outside to watch the well-respected officer pass.

Matthews was a 25-year veteran of the Hamilton Police. He died suddenly on December 17.
