Frozen water pipes

While the city deals with water main breaks, frozen pipes in homes have forced hundreds of Hamilton residents to get their water elsewhere.

We spoke with Dan Mckinnon, the director of Water and Wastewater Operations with the City of Hamilton and he told us that they have been swamped with residents calling about frozen pipes due to the freezing temperatures. He tells us that so far they’ve received about 450 calls, a majority over the past few weeks. 30 have involved public pipes but over 350 have been private pipes, which means it’s the resident’s responsibility to manage them, not the city’s.

You could call the city if you want, we tried and we were on hold for about 25 mins, which is short compared to the normal waiting times of about 50 mins. But at the end of the day, seeing that it’s a home owner’s problem and not the city’s the best people to call are plumbers. They’re the most prepared to help in those situations and we had no trouble getting in touch with one on short notice.

Calling the city might get you some water, they’ve delivered about 220 jugs of water since February 19th.  You can reach them at 905-546-4426 and request a water delivery.
