After a warm and nearly snowless December, the GTHA could see it’s first bout of winter weather tonight with snow and freezing rain.

Mixed weather could mean headaches for motorists and travel conditions are expected to rapidly deteriorate.

Environment Canada warns highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy and hazardous. Strong winds of 40km/h gusting to 70 could result in widespread power outages tonight.

The freezing rain warning includes Hamilton, Niagara, Dunnville, Caledonia and Brant County. There will be an ice-build up due to the freezing rain.

Travel adjustments are strongly urged to avoid snow later this evening. Environment Canada predicts 5 to 10 centimeters overnight across the GTA.

The agency says they are closely monitoring the development of the winter storm and so are we at CHCH.

Airlines have issued travel advisories ahead of the freezing rain tonight.

Air Canada has issued a travel alert for Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. They are asking travelers to check your flight status online before you leave for the airport.

In light of the expected weather, flights can be changed without penalty. WestJet has also issued travel advisories for Toronto and Hamilton. They say the ice storm will cause delays or cancellations.
