Four new cases of raccoon rabies have been confirmed by the Ministry of Natural Resources, bringing the total number of cases in the Hamilton area now to ten.
So far none of the samples collected tell the ministry anything about the spread of the disease but officials say additional samples over a longer period of time may give them a better sense of that.
It’s also too soon to say how effective the current baiting program is. They have dropped about 215 000 since the first case was identified earlier this month and they’re prepared to drop up to 240 000 in total.
They can’t say how big they expect the current outbreak to get, but told us last time round, from 1999 to 2005 in Brockville, there were 103 cases over the six years.
