The winter weather added some snow to the bitter cold we’ve been dealing with all week. But whether you saw snow today really depends on where you live around the region.

The southern end of Niagara region is being hammered by a lake effect snow storm. It’s creating dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Combine the snow with strong winds and plummeting temperatures and it’s enough to make you want to book that vacation in the south right now.

Heading south down the QEW toward Fort Erie, you drove into a wall of blinding snow.

“It’s not that safe to travel with a light load. The winds are blowing and it’s icy.”

It’s not safe to travel period! There are whiteout conditions. In some spots you’re lucky if you can see a headlight down the road.

On Garrison Road, you can barely see across the street. With the freezing temperatures and biting winds, just walking across the Wal-Mart parking lot was a challenge.

“We just moved here from Oshawa so we didn’t expect this. (Do you know what Fort Erie’s like in the winter?) Not yet. We’re finding out very early.”

“(What do you make of this weather?) I hate it. I’m heading south if I can find a way to get there.”

It’s bitterly cold out here. Skin could freeze in a few minutes.

The lake effect snow band ends here in the south end of Niagara Falls where it’s still windy but the skies are still relatively clear.

This lake effect snow may stick around for another 24 hours.

“This is as far as I’m going right now.”

Predictions are the morning commute Friday across Niagara is going to be messy.
