Former hostage Joshua Boyle charged with sex assault, forcible confinement

A Canadian man who was recently freed after being held hostage in Afghanistan with his family, is scheduled to appear in an Ottawa court Wednesday to face 15 charges.

According to the Canadian Press, Joshua Boyle is charged with eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of unlawful confinement and one count of causing someone to “take a noxious thing, namely Trazodone,” an antidepressant.

Boyle, 34, is also facing a charge of uttering a death threat and misleading a police officer.

The alleged incidents happened between Oct. 14 and Dec. 30, after he returned to Canada.

Boyle and his wife, Caitlan Coleman, were taken hostage in 2012 by a Taliban-linked group while backpacking in Afghanistan. The couple had three children while in captivity.
