Ford closing plant in St. Thomas

Another chapter in Ontario’s automotive history ends on Thursday when the last Crown Victoria ever built will roll off the Ford assembly line in St. Thomas.

The 44 year old factory closes after Ford phases out the old rear-wheel drive technology used in the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car.

The plant survived as long as it has because of the fleet demand for the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, as well as fleet sales of the Grand Marquis and Town Car.

Plans to close the plant were made in 2009.

About 1,200 workers will lose their jobs.
