Food frenzy in St. Catharines

St. Catharines has come a long way over the last few years. The downtown area is going through a revitalization and it’s becoming a food lovers dream.
It might not look like much now, but by next spring Andrew McLeod hopes to transform a 150 year old building into St. Catharines new it restaurant.
“We’re kind of trying to bring it back to what is was. Lot’s of original hardwood floors, were doing some exposed brick, modern looking kitchen and it’s going to be modern Canadian cuisine, is what we’re calling it.”
And Bolete is only one of nearly a dozen new restaurants in downtown St. Catharines. Everywhere you look there’s something new to try and for the most part their all one-of-a-kind independently owned establishments.
“You’re going to find something a little more individual. You’re going to find things like from scratch cooking and people are kind of putting their heart and soul into the plate. So hopefully you find something a little more interesting than you would at a big box chain restaurant.”
With new restaurants popping up left, right and centre, there is something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for vegan food, pub food, thai or sushi, you name it and you can probably find it here.
“So much has happened in St. Catharines in the last five years with the creation of the Performing Arts Centre which certainly drove things. The Merdian Centre and the Performing Arts Centre have triggered the revitalization of the downtown core.” said developer Michael Mazzolino.
While there are already so many restaurants to choose from there are at least four more in the works.
