With school just around the corner, food shelters are gearing up for a busy time of year. Food 4 Kids in Hamilton is unique because it caters specifically to children and delivers the food straight to their schools. The organization needs community support to survive and doesn’t want to turn any child away who is hungry.
Food 4 Kids feeds over 1000 children in 89 schools. It’s the only program of it’s kind in Canada and they are working to expand into other cities in the province. This years summer program helped to feed 500 children and their families. During the school year Food 4 Kids provides packages of healthy food for kids aged 5-14 years with limited or no access to food each weekend.
“In plain bags not to stigmatize children we place healthy foods, apples, oranges, bananas, soups. Volunteers package the food and deliver it to schools each Friday morning.” Lena Bassford, Food 4 Kids.
Food 4 Kids also accepts monetary donations but the focus is on healthy, so fruits and vegetables that are fresh are always a welcome donation. For a list of some of the foods they use in the packages visit Food4Kids.ca
