Flying tire kills driver on eastbound QEW

A tire came off of a vehicle on the QEW in Oakville and struck several other vehicles, killing the driver of one.

The incident happened shortly after noon today on the eastbound QEW just west of Winston Churchill Blvd.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says a wheel came off of a westbound vehicle and bounced across the median into the eastbound lanes hitting three separate vehicles.

The male driver of the first vehicle struck by the tire was killed as a result of the impact. A passenger in the same vehicle was taken to hospital.

The drivers of the other two vehicles struck did not receive any serious injuries.

Members of the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating the circumstances of this incident, trying to identify where exactly the wheel collided with the vehicle on the roadway before coming to a stop.

Police have not yet identified the vehicle that the wheel came from, but a viewer tells CHCH News that a westbound pickup truck pulling an empty boat trailer lost a wheel from their trailer.

All eastbound lanes are closed and traffic is being forced off the QEW at Ford Dr.
