Traffic was backed up Wednesday afternoon on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Niagara after several lanes were shut down following a crash involving a loose tire. Lauran Sabourin has the details.

The driver of a minivan was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon, when a tire flew off a horse trailer and directly into the windshield of his van. It happened at the base of the Garden City Skyway near Glendale Avenue. The horse trailer was Fort Erie bound and the van was Toronto bound. The Minivan driver was rushed to St. Catharines General before being airlifted to Hamilton General. Only one lane of Toronto bound traffic was open for some time. The OPP collision re-construction team is at the crash scene. Traffic was backed up and Service roads were clogged. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

A transport truck also hit the minivan.  The driver of that truck was not injured.  Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
