Five years of frustration

Monday will mark five years since a small group of people from Six Nations stopped work on a home building site in Caledonia.

The land claim dating back hundreds of years sparked a modern-day dispute between residents in Caledonia and the Six Nations. The residents felt the police assigned to Caledonia for security were there to protect the people who took over the site, while the Six Nations people feel the land was stolen from them years ago — and they wanted to take it back.

The dispute became violent at times, injuring ordinary citizens, members of the media, police and protesters. But the claim still hasn’t been settled, and the occupiers still have control of the land.

At Queen’s Park Wednesday the MPP for Haldimand and other people closely involved in the dispute spoke about the situation in Caledonia five years later.
