First day of school safety blitz in Niagara

Across Niagara region, almost 60-thousand elementary and high school students were heading back to class today. As Lauran Sabourin reports, Niagara Police were in full blitz mode this morning, making sure students arrived safely.
If you drove by a school zone in Niagara today, you might have seen police officers with radar guns pulling people over.

“Just to reinforce that message that it’s time to pay attention to our driving and make sure kids are safe” said Deputy Chief Joe Matthews.

Outside Quaker Road School in Welland police nabbed a number of speeders. 20 km over the limit, the fine is 95 dollars. 30 km over, it’s 220 dollars.
Last year police issued 140 violation notices on the first day of school, 86 for speeding.

The numbers are in from todays blitz. There were 66 speeding tickets issued, 7 for distracted driving, 10 seat belt violations. 66 drivers received warnings. Niagara Police say this year overall, more drivers are obeying the rules of the road near school zones.
