Officials say fire crews continue to make good progress tackling a massive forest fire in the province’s northeast.

The fire, known as Parry Sound 33, began on July 18 and has scorched more than 100 square kilometres of forest.

It remains stalled about five kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway.

“We haven’t had to close the highway due to this fire yet,” said Shayne McCool with the Ministry of Natural Resources.

“The OPP would make the call should safety become a factor for motorists.”

There are still 47 active forest fires spread across the northeast.

Twenty-one of those remain out of control.

Air quality and visibility remains an issue in the region because of the smoke.
