Fire rips through heritage building in Wainfleet

A devastating fire has destroyed a heritage building in Wainfleet late Thursday evening.

A group of people playing baseball near the Wainfleet village called 911 when they noticed ‘The Minor House’ building was on fire around 11 p.m.

More than 20 firefighters worked to knock down the blaze. Officials say the materials used to construct the 178-year-old building made it “difficult” for crews to keep the fire from spreading.

‘The Minor House’ is a historical exhibit that was under construction and is the centerpiece of the village.

The fire comes just a week before the 30th anniversary of the Marshville Heritage Festival. The annual event takes place Labour Day weekend in the village.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
