A fire in Wainfleet has gutted two homes, leaving a husband and wife homeless. The pair owned both properties living in one while renovating the other.
Neighbours on Lakeshore road in Wainfleet were rudely awakened by the sound of glass breaking and the smell of fire.
“I heard a noise out in the front yard and I was coming out to see what was going on and there was a big ball of fire shot in the air instantly. The fire had gone even higher than the tree line now and it started spreading, so we were all in shock.” Says one neighbour.
Crews were called to the Lakeside community just after 5 Monday morning. When they arrived two homes including a garage were fully engulfed. The homeowner tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but instead was burned when the hose melted in his hand. When the smoke cleared both homes were destroyed.
The heat from the fire was so intense it melted the siding of a home more than 20 metres away. Luckily the wind was not blowing to hard, which helped fire fighters control the blaze. Both people inside the home and neighbours were able to get out. It’s still not clear what caused the fire or where it started. Three cars were damaged as well as a lawn tractor. Damage is estimated at one point $5 million.
