Feeding the birds in Hamilton could earn you a $10,000 fine

As the temperatures rises, more and more people will head to the local parks for picnics and the city is reminding people to “NOT” share your food with wildlife because according to the city of Hamilton’s website, fines could jump to tens of thousands of dollars.
For many, feeding the birds at the park bring back childhood memories, but the city says, handing food to any wildlife does them more harm than good and when that lifestyle includes expecting food from humans, not getting any could be troublesome for park-goers, while feeding wildlife is a provincial offence, municipalities are the first line of policing.
We try to educate people to advocate for the wildlife and their coexistence in Hamilton but push comes to shove a fine is an option and it’s our last resort. Although exceptionally rare, if the case goes to court, it could skyrocket to twenty five thousand dollars.
Animal services says the city will only investigate those feeding animals if they’re contacted by concerned members of the public.
