The Burlington Canal Piers will soon be more welcoming and enjoyable spaces for those who like to bike and walk in the area.

Canada’s Minister of Transport was in town today to hand over ownership of the piers to the local port authority.

As of July 2nd, the two piers near the Burlington Lift Bridge will officially move from the government of Canada’s responsibility to the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority.

The ministers and mayors say residents like to use the piers for boating, biking, walking, and enjoying the sunshine but as of right now they are met with gates and restricted access.

The Port Authority as well as the cities of Hamilton and Burlington want to change that.

Ian Hamilton, president of the Port Authority says they will take care of keeping the piers functional and the cities of Burlington and Hamilton will be able to make the piers more fun.

The port authority hopes the area is ready to be a more inviting space by next summer.
