Hamilton’s Jewish community may now be a little safer, following an announcement by MP David Sweet earlier today.

Students from the Hamilton Hebrew Academy and Hamilton Jewish Middle School were in attendance for the announcement. The Adas Israel congregation will be receiving $32,000 over 12 months to help increase security to combat hate crimes.

Sweet spoke out against the rise in hate crimes.

“We’ve seen an increase in anti-semitic vandalism. This is unacceptable to you, its unacceptable to me, and its unacceptable to the government of Canada as well. That’s why we have introduced the security infrastructure program, the first of its kind, to curb the effects of hate crimes and to help build a stronger safer communities.”

The funding will help provide security cameras, alarm systems, fences and lighting. The hope is the funding will lead to an overall increase in community safety.
