Fate of the school year expected in Ontario Education Minister’s announcement today

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce will be joining Premier Doug Ford during his regularly scheduled COVID-19 briefing today.

It is expected that Lecce will be announcing the fate of the remainder of the school year. The government previously said that the provinces elementary and high schools would remain closed until the end of May. This would mean students would only have one month of in-person classes since the stay-at-home order was originally put in place in mid-March. However, speculation is that the Ontario government will be keeping schools closed for the remainder of the semester.

Private schools and First Nation schools are not affected by this decision. They, along with licensed child care centres, fall under Ontario’s Emergency Orders and are currently closed until June 6th.

The announcement will be going live on CHCH News’ Facebook page at 1:00 p.m.
