One man and 2 dogs are dead after an early morning fire at a house in Scarborough.
There were 7 people in the house at the time of the fire. After getting out, one person actually tried to kick in a basement window to save a resident who was stuck inside, unfortunately it didn’t work and that person has since died.
The fire started in the basement at the home on Birkdale Rd at around 6:25 am. A neighbour saw the smoke and called 9-11 while yelling inside for occupants to evacuate.
There were 4 people taken to the hospital, and one person was vital signs absent. That person, believed to be a man in his 40’s named Michael later died. Two others are in critical condition, and two dogs died inside the house.
The house is split into two apartments with a family living upstairs, and another downstairs. The family who lives upstairs were ok, and spent the morning at a neighbours.
The fire was under control just under 20 minutes after it started, and there were signs of just how quickly the basement had been engulfed. The Ontario Fire Marshalls office has been called into investigate.
