Family of Yosif Al-Hasnawi suing Hamilton police, paramedics & St. Joeseph’s healthcare for $10 million

The City of Hamilton has confirmed to CHCH that the family of a Hamilton teen killed while trying to save a senior is suing the Hamilton police, paramedics and St. Joeseph’s Healthcare for $10 million.

19-year old Yosif Al-Hasnawi was shot in the stomach on December 2nd after he tried to rescue a senior who was reportedly being accosted by a group of men in the city’s east end. Witnesses say that paramedics didn’t believe that the teen had been shot and accused him of faking the seriousness of his injuries. It took nearly 40-minutes for the first year Brock University student to be taken to hospital where he died soon after.
19-year old Dale Burning-Sky King is facing second-degree murder charges. 20-year old James Matheson has been charged with accessory after the fact.

In an email to CHCH a city spokesperson told us that they’ve received the notice of the lawsuit and that “consulting with our risk management and legal departments to prepare a statement of defence. Our thoughts and condolences continue to be with the family of Yosif Al-Hasnawi during this difficult time.”

The city also mentioned that they’ll continue to work with Niagara Regional police who launched a criminal investigation against the Hamilton paramedics in December at the request of the Hamilton police force.
