The family of the three-year old Syrian boy whose lifeless body was found washed up on the shores of Turkey is coming to Canada.

Some of Alan Kurdi’s surviving family members are being fast-tracked to Canada as part of Ottawa’s new refugee settlement strategy. The images of the drowned boy sparked international outrage and promises of change for refugees desperate to escape Syria. Alan’s Canadian aunt, Tima Kurdi, says immigration Canada has approved her application to bring her brother, Mohammed and his family to Canada, and hopes they’ll be in the Vancouver area by Christmas. Mohammed is the uncle of the three year old boy. His application was previously rejected for being incomplete. A university of Ottawa professor, who is advising the government on refugees says the photo of Alan Kurdi pushed Canadians to focus on refugees.

Alan’s father, told the “Fifth Estate” he’s chosen not to come to Canada, but takes solace in knowing that his son’s death helped change people’s perceptions of Syrian refugees.
