A Niagara Falls couple says they’re falling behind on their bills because of the rising hydro rates in the province. They say their hydro bill has tripled over the past couple of years and it’s an issue many Ontarians are facing.

Laura Birrell and her partner Fran McLaughlin are employed and own their own home but are feeling the squeeze. Last month the couple fell behind their hydro bill and now owe $677. Birrell has since been on a payment plan with her hydro provider after the bills became overwhelming. The couple has an above ground pool, but have since turned it off. They’ve even switched from an electric dryer to a gas one in hopes of saving money.

Birrell took her concerns to her local MPP Wayne Gates who brought NDP leader Andrea Horwath to her home this morning.
