Falling glass in downtown Hamilton

It may have looked like the sky was falling in downtown Hamilton this afternoon. Pieces of glass were dropping from a tall building near Jackson Square. At around 1:00, a piece of glass fell from a 13th floor window of the Robert Thompson building. It landed on a rooftop plaza and the sidewalk below. The broken glass was cleaned up quickly, and the window was boarded within minutes, but police and fire crews still blocked off the sidewalk, and a few lanes of King Street.

The property manager did not know exactly what caused the glass to fall, but suspects that there may have been a crack in the glass, and the high winds we experienced today caused the window to break. Environment Canada says the wind was gusting to 50 km’s an hour.

Last month, glass fell from the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto and injured two people. Nobody was hit by the falling glass here in Hamilton. There is still a lane blocked off and part of the sidewalk as well, and they will be blocked off until the window is fixed.
