Falling glass a growing hazard in Toronto condos
A busy section of downtown Toronto was still closed Wednesday night after glass fell from the 27th floor of the festival tower — the condos above the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
You can see an empty spot where glass used to be on the building.
It fell around 7:30 Tuesday night. Police say no one was hurt, but John Street between King and Adelaide was still cordoned off 23 hours later, while engineers inspect the building.
Daniels building corporation, the developer, says at this point it’s still a mystery as to why the glass fell, so they’ve sent it for testing. This is the second similar incident in recent days.
A section of Grosvenor street remains closed following five separate incidents of glass windows falling from a condominium building there.
People in the city are concerned.
“It happened before, and I believe they put up these buildings way too fast.”
“I would say that that’s faulty construction. It’s good that they cordoned off the street here”.
“It’s very scary because we live on 47th floor of building and now I should pay attention for my children.”
The city of Toronto says they are working with the developer to make the area around the building safe, which includes having the company put up temporary scaffolding overhead, to protect people below.
That section of roadway won’t re-open until all windows in the building have been checked.
