The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Brussels, saying its extremists opened fire in the airport and “several of them” detonated suicide belts.

The posting in the group’s Amaq news agency said another suicide attacker detonated in the metro.

The posting claimed the attack was in response to Belgium’s support of the international coalition arrayed against it.

Belgium has raised it terror alert to its highest level after 11 people are died and 81 hurt in twin explosions at the Brussels airport. Brussel’s Mayor has said that 20 people have also been killed in an explosion at a subway station, with another 55 hurt there.

Two explosions ripped through the Brussels airport during the morning rush hour as hundreds of passengers were trying to check in. All flights have been cancelled and flights are being diverted. At least one of the blasts came from a suicide bomber. A passenger arriving at the airport this morning described a scene with “blood everywhere, injured people, bags everywhere,”

Thousands of people were evacuated from the airport. And hundreds more were out on the tarmac as they deplaned from flights that were about to take off.

Outside of the airport smoke was seen where another explosion occurred. Panicked people started running through the streets, while others stood still, in shock over what was going on.

Another blast took place at the subway station. People underground we evacuated, trying to find their way out in the dark. Back above ground, emergency officials treated those who were hurt.

These explosions come only days after the prime suspect in the Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, was arrested in Brussels. Dramatic video shows his safehouse surrounded by police, and Abdeslam bursts out and runs down the street. Officers open fire, and he’s shot in the leg, then he is then led away.

Officials have not linked the arrest to the explosions, but Abdeslam did tell investigators he was plotting more violence from Brussels.
