Summer officially arrives at 6:34pm EST this evening and Mother Nature is sparing no expense ushering in the new season. The scorching temperatures were building all weekend, and today the mercury is set to soar above 30 degrees celsius. With the humidity, temperatures could feel closer to 40.
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Hamilton and most of Southern Ontario. Heat warnings are issued when high temperatures pose an elevated risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
The conditions can pose a health risk to the elderly, young children and those with compromised immune systems.
Environment Canada has these tips on staying safe in the heat:
– drink plenty of water or clear fluids to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day
-dress in light colours and in lightweight clothing, also wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
-if you need to be outside, try to seek shade as much as possible
-stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces if possible
-make sure to check on elderly neighbours who may be at a higher risk for heat-related illness
The OSPCA is also reminding people not to leave pets unattended inside vehicles; the temperatures can prove fatal for animals.
Later today and into the evening, there is a possibility of thunderstorms across the GTHA.
