Emergency funds for U.S. Steel pensioners available in January

Transitional funding for U.S. Steel Canada pensioners who have lost their health benefits is expected to begin flowing in January.
But the three million dollar government fund is only expected to last for three months, if the money doesn’t run out sooner.
Former Stelco workers lost their benefits at the end of October when U.S. Steel received court permission to preserve cash to keep its plants in Nanticoke and Hamilton afloat.
Half a million dollars in the fund is reserved for pensioners “in hardship.” The rest will cover prescription drugs.
