Emergencies crews have to deal with extreme cold

While public health officials around the Golden Horseshoe have issued cold weather alerts, and are telling people to stay inside, the fact is crews responding to emergencies have no choice but to be out in the cold. This morning, an SUV slid off the 406 at Beaverdams, rolled twice, and ended up in the ditch. In knee deep snow, firefighters helped the driver to an ambulance. Emergency crews were there in minutes, but in these temperatures – below minus 15 during much of the morning -Niagara paramedics say even if this was a minor call, somebody outside in a driveway with a leg injury, could see signs of frostbite in 15 minutes.

Last year, there were 28 extreme cold alert days, but just in the first seven weeks of this year there have already been 15 cold alert days.
