Elderly couple hospitalized after Burlington house fire, $500K in damages

An elderly couple were taken to hospital after a house fire in Burlington early Friday morning that caused approximately $500,000 in damages.

The Burlington Fire Department says a man and woman were taken to Joseph Brant Hospital for smoke inhalation. The woman was later transferred to a hospital in Toronto to treat her severe burns.

Crews say the blaze happened shortly after 1 a.m. on Winding Way.

It says 22 first responders and nine emergency vehicles were at the scene.

Firefighters arrived to smoke and flames coming from the home. Investigators believe the blaze started in the living room at the back of the house and then spread to the second floor.

The cause is unknown at this time, but the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called to investigate due to the severity of the injuries.
