An Edmonton police officer was shot and killed, and another officer injured last night after they tried to arrest a man at a home in the southwest part of the city.

Constable Daniel Woodall, a 35-year-old married father of two young children who had eight years service with the Edmonton police was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

Sgt Jason Harley, age 38, was shot in the lower back but has already been released from hospital.

Thick smoke and flames began rising from the home shortly after the team of officers with the hate crimes unit went to the home around 8 pm to arrest a man for criminal harassment.

Dozens of emergency vehicles responded and police warned people to stay away, but Edmonton’s police chief now says he doesn’t believe there’s any further danger to the public, even though no one is in custody.

It’s thought the shooter may have died in the fire, which completely leveled the home.

More details are expected at a news conference at 10:30 EDT this morning.
