Ed Clark asked to review U.S. Steel situation

The Ontario government is asking retired bank president Ed Clark to review operations at U.S. Steel Canada along with Ontario’s steel industry as a whole.

Premier Kathleen Wynne made the former head of the TD Bank her “business adviser” this summer.

He’s already earned a reputation as the province’s financial fixer and championed the Hydro One sale as well as opening up beer distribution in Ontario.

Now he’s been asked to take “a hard look” at the value of the remaining U.S. Steel assets in Hamilton and Nanticoke.

The future of the former Stelco lands is in limbo after the company failed to sell any of its properties this summer.

U.S. Steel Canada is operating under court-ordered creditor protection as it seeks to restructure, but it has been effectively cut off by its American parent company.
