Earn a bike program

More than a hundred children in the Hamilton area are seeing the immediate results of their hard work.

They received new bikes Tuesday afternoon after helping to clean up their neighbourhoods.

Some of the children between the ages of 9 to 12 have never even owned a bike so this was a very special event for them at the Centre on Barton Street.

Children had to put in 30 hours of community service in order to earn a brand new Tim Hortons sponsored bike, helmet and water bottle.

Kids had to qualify through an interview process conducted by Hamilton’s community policing centre.

The program is about 15 years old and a great success.

The earn a bike program was initiated by Hamilton police in 1996 and is now offered in dozens of cities in Ontario.
