High school teachers in Durham Region are on strike as of this morning, cancelling classes in Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering and Ajax. The labour unrest could spread to six other school boards, including the Halton board, later in the week.
In a very brief statement, the Halton District School Board said, “Negotiations between the OSSTF Halton local and the Halton Public Board took place this past week with some progress being made, and two meeting dates have been scheduled for this upcoming week.”
The major issues are larger class sizes, more out-of-class supervision time, as well as a demand for an unpaid day off and a slower movement up the salary grid. Teachers in Ontario currently make a salary of between $45,000 and $95,000 a year.
