The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in after a fire ripped through a Dundas home Monday evening.

Crews were called to the two-storey house on Best Ave. just before 6 p.m.

The structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

Hamilton Fire Department says crews used a defensive approach from the outside to try and knock down the blaze.

The fire was eventually put out but crews remained on scene for several hours to control and extinguish hot spots.

Fire officials say no one was home at the time of the blaze. They say the homeowners had left around 5 p.m. and arrived home while crews were on scene putting out the fire.

Damage is estimated at $500,000.
