Drivers urged to Watch for Bikes
It’s an effort to stop car-bike collisions before they happen.
The CAA launched its annual Watch for Bikes campaign Thursday.
With the help of Hamilton Police, Watch for Bikes stickers were handed out to drivers.
They go on the driver’s side mirror, as a reminder to keep an eye out for cyclists.
Hamilton Police Constable Claus Wagner says with the increase in bicycle lanes, drivers have to be more careful: “It’s important for drivers to remember when they pass a bicyclist they’re not to forget about them when they pull into a parking spot, they’re to check their mirrors so they know where that cyclist is.”
The CAA’s John Ennis says not watching could cost you: “When you’re opening your car door, watch for bikes, check your blind spot. The fine for opening the door into a passing cyclist is $110 dollars and two demerit points and it’s something simple that can be prevented”.
You can pick up a Watch for Bikes sticker at your local CAA store.
