Downtown Hamilton shut down for potential hazardous leak

Officers shut down part of Hamilton’s downtown core overnight to investigate reports of a possible chlorine leak prompting a HAZMAT response from the fire department.
The HAZMAT crew and police focussed on a Dodge Sprinter work van on Bay and George Street.
Officers closed the roadways around King and Main during the investigation.
All the hazardous materials were checked and the crews determined a leaking fire extinguisher at the back of the truck created the alarming odor. No chlorine leak was found.
The scene was opened to the public just before 4 a.m. this morning.
