With 4 border crossings, Niagara is one of the busiest hubs for trade between the Canada and the U.S.. There are a lot of questions surrounding projects in the region, including the new General Electric plant in Welland. The U.S. industrial giant announced plans to move production of its gas generators from Wisconsin to Welland last year. The facility is set to open in two years, but it’s not clear if Trump victory will jeopardise it.

“Trump said a lot of things during the campaign trail, as most politicians do. I think that once he is in office, reality will dictate what he can and can’t deliver on,” said Dolores Fabiano, Niagara Chamber of Commerce.

Fabiano says if Trump follows through on his campaign promise of tearing up the North American free trade agreement, it could be a big blow for Welland.

GE would export its products to the U.S. through the Welland Canal and Niagara’s 4 border crossings. That’s what made the Welland location ideal.

“About 85% of the traffic and trade for the U.S. and Canada go through every year, so this is a very important relationship,” said Alan Caslin, Regional chair.

Over $660 billion of goods and services crossed the U.S.-Canadian border last year.
